I muttered the exact same thing at the screen...

But hey, nice to see either of 'em mentioned at all in a movie.

Can't even compare the two. Different styles/eras/countries, even. I don't put Herschell Gordon Lewis up to Argento at all. HGL was strictly splatter and camp and wanted to make money off the success of guts & tits. Argento was giallo, more suspense/mystery based and cared more about the visual art of his films, I would argue.

Anyway, that's my NERD FILM opinion.

agreed. that's why i think that line in juno is especially ridiculous. she should have said it was better than something else that relates better.. although perhaps suspiria was chosen because it's relatively well-known.. ? i dunno. either way, that line just really irked me, and i had to break my 6+ months of lj silence to comment about it.

Hahaha, I'm glad you broke the silence.

And I don't think Argento "owed his career" to HGL, as Jason Bateman said in the movie (I think). I think they're coming from two different disciplines and really, the only thing they have in common is that they happen to both make violent movies. I don't really fit Argento or Bava or any of those Italian dudes into the same sphere with HGL or Roger Corman or David Friedman or any of the American splatter people.

This could be a book. Real nerds objections to on screen nerds.
