honest to blog [Tuesday, April 8, 2008 | 2:48pm]
[ mood | amused yet annoyed ]

this weekend while standing in line for a midnight screening of piranha, the oscar®-winning(!) writer of juno was standing directly in front of me. wearing an unsurprisingly tacky leopard-print jacket, she was talking on her cellphone about something that didn't particularly interest me. however, once the line started moving as we were all being let into the theater, she honestly ended her conversation by saying, "later, gator!" and when i looked at ther iphone as the call was disconnected, i saw "Edgar Wright" in large letters on the screen.

(also in attendance at this screening: quentin tarantino, eli roth, drew barrymore, justin long. i thought it was interesting that quentin and eli skipped out on the midnight screening of grindhouse that was happening only a couple miles away. but perhaps there would have been too many fanboys there, and nobody bothered them at the new beverly.)

postscript: i realize that this does not cover every cover of the bee gees' classic song. in fact, here is one that didn't make the cut, which the bee gees themselves apparently said is "the kind of thing you hear in a lunatic asylum, fused with…an old man with diarrhea." i concur.

i'm as excited about muxtape as the next guy (or girl), despite the fact that i'm expecting it to be shut down by the RIAA at any second. it's a great idea, and it's executed perfectly simple. sure, there are a few things i would add to it (and maybe they're already in development), but it still works great without any bells or whistles.

so is it lame that i just want to keep listening to my own mix over and over? probably. but it's a good one.*

mp3 delirium [Friday, February 15, 2008 | 12:12am]
[ mood | feelin' kinda (mike) patton ]

this probably won't interest very many people on my friends list, but i just noticed that the entire 3rd fantômas album can now be legally acquired for only 99¢ (or 5 "pepsi points") via amazon's new mp3 download service. the album consists of a single 74-minute-long track.

of course, it's still available on cd with cool packaging for a bit more money.. and via p2p for free.

hoof arted [Saturday, June 9, 2007 | 4:45pm]

[ music | elvis costello blood & chocolate ]

last night after work, i went to the new landmark theatre to see パプăƒȘă‚« (paprika). i've never been a huge anime fanboy (although robot carnival is very dear to my heart), but i thought that this one looked quite interesting. i arrived at the theater quite early, mostly due to the fact that i didn't want to sit at work any longer. the theater has assigned seats, and i had already picked my perfect seat online that afternoon. i was the first to be seated and thought i had made the right decision. i was almost perfectly in the middle, which was my goal.

unfortunately, before the movie actually started an older couple sat directly next to me on my left. at least the couple on the right of me were nice enough to leave a buffer seat. i mean, this wasn't going to be a sold out screening, so there was no need to be all up in a stranger's business. i tried to make the best of it, since assigned seating does indeed have a downside: you never know who's going to be next to you, and you can't just get up and move to another seat because somebody else may have already reserved it. the man sat next to me, and i immediately noticed him breathing loudly but figured that the movie would drown it out enough so that it wouldn't be distracting.

as the movie started, he was getting more and more on my nerves for reasons i don't exactly remember now. then i heard him fart. i was hoping it was just somebody else shifting in their seat, but a few seconds later the smell hit my nose. i immediately moved as far to my right as possible and looked behind me to see if any other seats were open. as soon as the opening sequence had finished and the credits began, i climbed as quickly as possible into one of the seats behind me. there was no way i was going to let some heavy-breathing, farting guy ruin the movie for me.

and it was fine from then on, although i noticed the guy next to me bobbing his head anytime the music in the film got really loud. that seemed kind of strange but didn't really bother me. perhaps he owned the soundtrack and was really, really, really into it. the guy who was previously sitting next to me appeared to be leaning into where i was sitting and falling asleep. at any rate, the movie was good; not quite as crazy as i expected, but definitely one that i will be seeing again.

postscript: tomorrow night i will be seeing brand upon the brain!, with live orchestration and narration by udo kier (which will actually be the second time i've seen mr. kier in person at the same venue). i figured he would be the most entertaining of the narrators scheduled for l.a.; my second choice was mike watt, whom i recently saw tear up the stage at the troubadour with melt-banana.
